While the book does not get into the discussion of the first published versus the "original" editions, it does include a discussion of the String Quintet which many believe is a symphony with reduced instrumentation. It also introduces a grouping of the symphonies, which seen in hindsight, never received much acceptance. Those groupings are:
The Minor Trilogy -Symphony No. 1 in C Minor -Symphony No. 2 in C Minor -Symphony No. 3 in D Minor
The Major Tetralogy -Symphony No. 4 in E Flat Major -Symphony No. 5 in B Flat Major -Symphony No. 6 in A Major -Symphony No. 7 in E Major
Retrospect and Farewell -Symphony No. 8 in C Minor -Symphony No. 9 in D Minor
