By August Stradal (1860-1930)

Prof. August Stradal, music teacher and composer was born on May 17, 1860 in Teplice, Bohemia. His father was a lawyer and a member of the town council. August Stradal attended the grammar school in Litomerice and the conservatoire in Vienna, his teachers being professor Anton Door, professor Theodor Lescheticky and the world known master Anton Bruckner. On September 20, 1884 the young artist left for Weimar to become a disciple of Franz Liszt whom he also accompanied to Budapest and Bayreuth in 1885 and 1886.
When he returned to Teplice Stradal was active as a music teacher until 1890. In the 30s he married Rosa Zweigelt from Krasna Lipa. Professor Stradal was an advocate of Liszt's music and an artistic re-designer of the compositions of Anton Bruckner in whose Artistic Union located in Litomerice he was active until his death. August Stradal is also the author of several literary works, e.g. Memoirs of Franz Liszt, Small Union etc. published by Paul Haupt in Bern in 1929. In 1928 August Stradal won the Czechoslovak State Award.
Professor August Stradal died in Krasna Lipa on March 13, 1930. He is buried in the family tomb of the Zweigelts in Krasny Buk.
