For four nights in October of 1942, Wilhelm Furtwaengler conducted the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in a series of concerts in which he presented what is now considered a legendary performance of Bruckner's Symphony No. 5.

The concerts were broadcast by the Reichs Radio Gesellschaft (RGG). One of those performances was captured on tape and has been released on numerous LPs and CDs.

But parts of another performance were recorded off the radio in Vienna Dr. Hermann May, a sound engineer primarily known for the live recordings he made during performances of the Vienna State Opera from 1933 to 1944. Thanks to his recording, it is now possible to hear segments of one of the other performances in this concert series.

A comparison of the performance and audience noise indicates that this recording is different from the complete recording.

This is an incomplete aircheck that is missing the first movement and most of the second, but anyone interested in Furtwangler's unique and ever-changing style will want to hear this recording.
