Fritz Reiner's Bruckner - Part of a recording found!
After years of wondering, an Internet newsgroup exchange pointed me in the direction of a broadcast transcription of a Bruckner performance conducted by Fritz Reiner. The transcription disc contains a section of the Bruckner Symphony No. 4 performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Only one of the two instantaneous-cut glass based lacquer discs survives so only the first movement and part of the Andante are available. The transcription disc was cut during a live broadcast from Pittsburgh's Syria Mosque over radio Station WCAE in Pittsburgh on Sunday, February 8, 1942. The balance of the program was:
National Anthem (remember, Pearl Harbor was just 2 months before...) BACH: Prelude in E Flat Major BRUCKNER: Symphony No. 4 in E Flat Major (intermission) BRAHMS: Violin Concerto (with Yehudi Menuhin)
