Colin Davis' unusual approach to Bruckner's 7th Symphony
Back around 1986, when serving as Music Director of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Colin Davis made a unique decision. Since Bruckner's 8th and 9th Symphonies have the Scherzo as the second movement, why not do that with the 7th? I, for one, can think of one good reason - Bruckner never intended to have it played that way!

Nevertheless, the "unique tradition" continued. In 2010, Davis conducted the Seventh Symphony with the Guildhall Orchestra and the movements were played I-III-II-IV. I can just imagine the furrowed brows amongst audience members...
