The premiere performance of the 1874 version of Bruckner's Symphony No. 4 took place at the Brucknerhaus in Linz on September 20, 1975. It was the major event of the 1975 Brucknerfest and the performace was produced for broadcast by the Austrian Radio (ORF), the BBC and NCRV in Hilversum. For the premiere, Kurt Woess conducted the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. The recording was subsequently released in a special 2 LP set on the Austro Mechana label (and pressed by Polygram). The LP was never offered into wide distribution and it soon went out-of-print. Its only release on CD was as a companion disc in Cornelis van Zwol's book, Anton Bruckner - Leven en Werken.
