Wellesz, Egon: Anton Bruckner and the Process of Musical Creation

Egon Wellesz
This essay appeared in "The Musical Quarterly," Volume 24 (1938), pp. 265-90. It is a cleverly crafted essay that praises the work of Robert Haas but uses the material furnished by him to explain Bruckner's creative process thereby validating many of the published editions that appeared during Bruckner's lifetime. In doing so, Wellesz is able to refute Haas' complete disregard for the first published editions while not offending the political forces who, just the year before, officially endorsed Haas' project.
