George A. Marek has written a compelling book about the decline and fall of the Austrian Empire. In a chapter, entitled, "Compensation," he raises the interesting theory that while countries experience political decline, they often compensate for it with a cultural renaissance.

One of the examples he gives regarding Austria is that of composer, Anton Bruckner. His brief description of Bruckner is an enjoyable read.
