This essay comes from Philip H. Goepp's three volume study of western symphonic music originally published between 1897 and 1913. In volume three, entitled "Modern Symphonies," Goepp devotes several pages to Bruckner - specifically the 4th and 9th Symphonies. As one can see, critics of the day were still having difficulty pegging Bruckner's place in the symphonic repertoire.
