Recording of the Year: Symphony No. 1 / Christian Thielemann / Staatskapelle Dresden / C Major video
It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Bruckner Society of America’s Board of Directors has chosen the performance of Bruckner’s First Symphony by Christian Thielemann and the Dresden Staatskapelle released by C Major on DVD and Blu-Ray disc as the Society’s Recording of the Year award. We have judged this to be the most outstanding new Bruckner recording of the past year.
We also recognize this recording as a pioneering achievement, because Maestro Thielemann has chosen to use the new edition of the 1868 version of the Symphony edited by Thomas Roeder for the New Bruckner Complete Edition. As the first recorded performance of this new edition to have appeared on the market, these discs will enable Bruckner lovers everywhere to hear the symphony in the form in which it was first heard 150 years ago.
Finally, we salute the performance by Maestro Thielemann and Dresden Staatskapelle, which is compelling. The recording conveys both the power and the expressiveness of this splendid but underappreciated Symphony. It is a most valuable addition to the discography.
