Sony promotes this Bruckner cycle as the first by the Vienna Philharmonic under a single conductor. It is also the first cycle by the VPO which includes the early F Minor and D Minor symphonies. I can understand why Sony promotes these facts, but for the Vienna Philharmonic, this should be an embarrassment. The ensemble has made great individual recordings, but the management should have long rectified this neglect. I'm sure Abbado, Haitink, Chailly and Blomstedt, to name just few, would have been willing.

The VPO always had a difficult relationship with Bruckner, but while the orchestra has recorded numerous Brahms cycles, it has taken over 125 years for the orchestra to set down a full recorded cycle with one conductor. Kudos for Thielemann for finally doing it, but why this long??? What a shame. What missed opportunities.
