"South German Philharmonic" Bruckner 5th performers are identified!
Last month, I announced that two of the “infamous” South German Philharmonic recordings that have been offered over the past forty years have finally been properly identified. These recordings, offered on different labels credited various conductors (both real and imagined). They included such names as Cesare Cantieri, Denis Zsoltay, Albert Lizzio, Hans Swarowsky, Hans Zanotelli, and even the producer, Alfred Scholz. The two that were identified last month were:

-The Symphony No. 2 where the real performers were identified as Erich Schmid and the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra.
-The Symphony No. 9 where the real performers were identified as Stanislaw Skrowaczewski and the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Three other recordings in this series (Symphonies 4, 5 and 6) were still not identified, but with the now established link to the SWF Symphony Orchestra, I did some digging into their database. While there was no match for Symphonies 4 and 6, there was a close match (in terms of timing) for the Symphony No. 5. Again, dipping into the cash reserves make possible by website buyers, I was able to purchase an audition copy of the performance from the SWR and I can now officially announce that the “South German Philharmonic” recording of the Bruckner Symphony No. 5 was in fact performed by Michael Gielen and the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra. The performance was recorded in the Hans Rosbaud Studios (#5) in Baden-Baden on January 18, 1968. It was first broadcast on Sudwestfunks May 5, 1969.

So if you have the Point CD conducted by Albert Lizzio, or the Onyx CD conducted by Alfred Scholz, or the Cantus Classics CD conducted by Denis Zsoltay or the Preservation Music LP conducted by Hans Swarowsky, you can now change the performers to Michael Gielen and the SWF Symphony Orchestra.
