June, 2025: Symphony No. 1 / Dennis Russell Davies / RSO Vienna / Strabag AG CD

Strabag AG is a large construction company headquartered in Cologne, Germany. For some years, the company produced a series of CD recordings that highlighted the musical history of cities where they had corporate affiliates. In 1996, they chose the city of Linz. From correspondence with the company some twenty years ago, it appears that Linz was chosen that year in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the death of Anton Bruckner. The cloth-bound box set included a CD devoted to the music of Mozart - his "Linz Symphony," and a CD featuring a performance of the Symphony No. 1 by Anton Bruckner. A short work by Franz Schubert filled out that CD. The Bruckner performance featured Dennis Russell Davies conducting the Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra. The performance was recorded about ten years before his commercial recording with the Bruckner Orchestra Linz. Audio available June 1st.
