Welcome to the Bruckner Discography Newsletter for February 1, 2012
I open this month’s newsletter with a reminder about the upcoming (August 11-22, 2012) Bruckner Tour of Austria. I am happy to report that the tour will go ahead as scheduled. We have confirmation from enough people to move forward with the tour. We can now begin to schedule special presentations and gatherings at some of the sites now that the tour is confirmed. There is still time to join the tour. Please take a look at the itinerary to see what is presently included. Now you can visit all of these sites plus have the added benefit of being with people who share your enthusiasm.
For those of you planning on attending the Carnegie Hall performance of the four movement Bruckner 9th with the Berlin Philharmonic on February 24th, there is an opportunity for an informal get-together and an opportunity to meet John Phillips, who collaborated in the SPMC edition being presented. If you plan to be there, please let me know and we’ll see what we can arrange. The present plan is to meet around 5PM (the pre-concert talk is at 7PM). We may also be able to gather informally after the concert.
Also for those near New York City, On Friday, February 3, 2012, The Collegiate Chorale and the Israel Philharmonic will present Anton Bruckner’s Te Deum and British composer Michael Tippett’s oratorio A Child of Our Time featuring Nicole Cabell, John Relyea, Russell Thomas, and Marietta Simpson. The concert is at 7:00PM at Carnegie Hall.
There has been a lot of activity to start out the year, so please read through the headings below to stay up-to-date.
News and Events Please frequent Latest News. This is my chronological listing that is constantly updated. You will always find some new and interesting items here. Items will usually be retained here for a few months. Older but relevant items are retained in the News Archive which can be found at the bottom of the Latest News list.
New this month:
- There are some free Internet listening opportunities listed. Most of them are for a limited time so check them out soon.
- Amazon.com is offering the classic Bongartz Bruckner 6th as a very cheap download.
- The Berlin Philharmonic’s Digital Concert Hall is offering two performances of the Bruckner 9th with Simon Rattle. One is the three movement version from Taipai, China and the other (starting on February 9th) is the four movement SPMC version performed live from Berlin.
Bruckner Society News There are several Bruckner Society activities scheduled for this month. These include a Kilenyi Medal presentation to Herbert Blomstedt on February 8th in San Francisco. Board member Neil Schore will make the presentation at Davies Hall. On February 10th and 11th, a memorial concert in honor of past president Charles Eble (1915-2009) will take place in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Conductor Tim Hankewich will lead Orchestra Iowa in Bruckner’s Symphony No. 5. Present plans have me on stage for part of the pre-concert talk. Next month, presentations are scheduled for conductors Stefan Sanderling (Toledo) and Stanislaw Skrowaczewski (Minneapolis).
As a fundraiser, the Society has issued a limited edition compact disc featuring the best restoration currently possible of the historic 1924 recording of the Bruckner Symphony No. 7 conducted by Oskar Fried. This recording has had a very uneven history of releases (noisy / off-pitch, etc.) and the Bruckner Society, in cooperation with Music and Arts, has remastered this performance using the best techniques available today. By purchasing this special CD, you will be helping to support the Society’s upcoming activities. Contributions are tax-deductible. For more information, click here.

New this month: There are lots of new releases this month and many of those announced last month are finally becoming available in the U.S. Most are now available through my web store. In addition, I have brought in some very interesting Japanese releases that will not be distributed in the west. Stock on these is very limited.
I should point out and clarify one bit of confusion regarding the three recent releases of the Bruckner Symphony No. 1 (Simone Young, Mario Venzago and Marcus Bosch). All three of these issues state that the edition used is the 1866 original “Linz” version. While the recordings indeed present the “Linz” version, it is, in fact, the 1877 revision of the music performed at the premiere of 1868. Of late, the term "Linz 1866 edition" has been properly used to identify William Carragan’s first performing version derived ultimately from the orchestral parts copied in 1866. This was the edition used in George Tintner’s recording for Naxos. It will also be the edition heard in Gerd Schaller’s upcoming release on Profil.
Upcoming Releases and Recent Discoveries
Other releases from around the world including some older issues that have just been discovered. This is a more comprehensive listing of new recordings.
Articles The Articles Section lists dozens of essays in English and German. Many are taken from liner notes of deleted LPs and others have been graciously offered by their authors.
New this Month:
- The essay, “Bruckner and Twentieth Century Politics” by Paul Hawkshaw of Yale University has been added. The essay was written as part of the program notes to an American Symphony Orchestra concert.
- Benjamin Gunnar Cohrs’ essay on the completion of the Bruckner Symphony No. 9 has been updated to reflect final revisions made since the 2011 Brabants Orchestra concert and those to be presented by the Berlin Philharmonic this month.
- I have prepared an updated version of my essay on the forgotten Bruckner pioneer, Felix Maria Gatz in that more information has surfaced regarding his career.

New this Month: Two sections (the only two recorded) of Bruckner’s Te Deum as performed by Felix Maria Gatz. This historic 1927 recording was offered previously through a link in the articles section, but it deserves its own place under the list of recordings available on this site. In addition, this is an improved recording taken from a French Odeon 78 that has just been acquired by the Bruckner archive.
Wanted (by us) & Unwanted (by you) Recordings: There are not too many Bruckner recordings that are missing from my archive, but a list of the recordings that have eluded me can be seen at Wanted Recordings. Any help in retrieving these recordings will be greatly appreciated and rewarded.
If you have unwanted Bruckner LPs, CDs, 78s or tapes, please consider sending them to me. I am always looking for items for the archive.
Upload files to the website: If you ever have a recording or document file that you want to share with me, I have opened up an ftp (file transfer protocol) site for that activity. Simply go to ftp.abruckner.com. The username is bruckner and the password is guest. Using ftp software (such as ws/ftp), files can then be easily transferred. This information is available in the Contact section of this site.
Visit my Store: Please don't forget to visit my store. There are unusual CDs, DVDs, collectibles and downloads at very reasonable prices.
Of special note:
- The webstore has been modified by separating audio and video offerings as well as book and scores.
- I have added some scores prepared by Japanese scholar, Takeo Noguchi to my list of offerings.
- Right now, there are some very special bargains contained within these pages, so take a look!
Many of these items are difficult to locate and some are only available here. As always, the proceeds help support this site. The Bruckner Store.
Support this Site: Use my Amazon.com link for all your purchases This is my monthly reminder to you that by using the Amazon.com, ArchivMusic.com and JPC.de links (seen on the right on the website) you will be providing financial support for this website at no additional cost to you. Earned commissions help defray the cost of CD acquisitions which are often required to obtain the information posted in the discography. ANY purchase, not just Bruckner, will benefit this site. Just to give you an idea, recent purchases (in addition to numerous books and CDs) have included a computer, the movie, "Gone with the Wind", ink and toner cartridges, a bacon grill, a floor steamer and XL Boxer shorts. Amazon simply informs me as to what was purchased – not who bought them - but they have certainly helped support this site! Home Page

Finally, here is my monthly reminder that if you do not subscribe to the Bruckner Journal, you should. Editor, Ken Ward does a great job in filling each issue with news, reviews and essays. To subscribe, click here.
