Like many composers, Bruckner's oeuvre of compositions has been cataloged with numbers assigned to each composition. In Bruckner's case, this work was published in the "Werkverzeichnis Anton Bruckner," a catalogue of Anton Bruckner's works edited by Renate Grasberger. While this work is extremely helpful in locating Bruckner's works, it side-steps the issue of the various versions in which the symphonies have been published.
